Kitakamakura Mishimaya Iron Handicraft Workshop

Mishimaya Iron Handicraft Workshop was founded in the19th year of Meiji (in 1886) as a blacksmith to make iron farming tools.
While keeping the traditional skills and techniques,at present we make iron handicrafts mainly for both interior and exterior.
Our biggest character of all is a curve called an arabesque. An arabesque is forged by hitting iron heated up to nearly 1,000 degrees celcius. With this technique called "blaze forging", we can produce more delicate and precise curves than with machinery.

What is "wrought iron"?

鍛造
It is a technique to produce a variety of shapes by hitting, stretching and folding iron bars and boards after blazing them in the oven called "Hodo".
This is workmanship of a blacksmith called "blaze forging".
There is another workmanship of a blacksmith called cast iron. Cast iron is to cast melted metal into a mold in order to form a certain shape. The products formed in this way are called articles of cast metal.
